North West Maui is rugged and beautiful. It includes the rainforest of Iao Valley with wonderful hiking along the Iao Stream. Further along the back side, we'll come to Swinging Bridges, the Blowhole and miles of incredible coastline. We will also pass through the small Hawaiian community of Kahakuloa. There's a fruit stand that offers local favorites such as shave ice and haupia (coconut) ice cream.

The Road to Hana is famous for its abundant waterfalls and lush bamboo forests and rainforests. Just getting to Hana can be an all day affair if we want to stop and see everything along the way. Hana itself offers many wonderful spots we won't want to miss. Hana may be the only place in the world that has white sand, black sand AND red sand beaches.
Enterprising Locals abound with stands of fresh fruit & flowers, basket weaving and other local arts.
Going home the backway brings us through Ulupalakua, the Tedeschi Winery and a beautiful view overlooking the entire Island as the sun sets behind the West Maui Mountains. We have many photos of this area in our slideshow.

Upcountry Maui offers an incredibly wide range of climate, topography and activities. Of course, there's world famous Haleakala Crater, several botanical gardens, Protea farms & Tedeschi Winery. But you may be surprised to learn there are many hidden waterfalls, fabulous hiking, produce farms (where you may be lucky enough to enjoy Kula's amazingly huge & sweet strawberries), a fragrant lavender farm and even a redwood forest. It could take a full day to discover all of Upcountry Maui secrets. |
